Meet Amelia. She took a job dancing in a cage to pay off debts a stranger racked up in her name. Tonight, someone in the VIP section asked for her by name.
The cage I have been dancing in for the last three hours gets slowly lowered to the ground.
I glance at the other cages and notice none of them are being lowered.
My boss opens the cage and lends me a hand until I step outside. Then one of my coworkers comes over.
"Follow me," he says.
"Where are we going?"
"You’ll see. Christian asked me to take you."
Christian owns the company, so now I am really worried.
We walk up to the VIP section and head down the long path that overlooks the dance floor. I am led all the way to the back, and my eyes land on the darkest man I have ever met.
The man before me oozes money and blood. I have never met a criminal in real life, but I have seen what they look like in the movies, and this is exactly what they look like.
Even though he immediately makes a shiver go down my spine, I wonder why I am here.
"Please, sit." A thick Russian accent comes out of him.
He has two shot glasses in front of him and pours us both a drink.
"To finding the answers we seek."
"Drink, malen’kiy krolik."
I take the shot back, and it burns my throat.
"Another," he says. Just as I am taking mine, he adds, "I take it that you like a good vodka, Amelia?"
I practically choke on my drink, because I know I have not told him my name.
"How do you know my name?"
"It doesn’t matter how I know your name. You and I both know that. All that matters is that you answer my questions honestly."
